Around 7:30 am, departure from Arequipa with a private vehicle and your tour conductor for a little more than two and a half hours away through magnificent arid deserts.
Arrival in the Valley of Majes, about 170km (105.6 mi) from Arequipa. First of all, you will discover this immense agricultural area located between impressive cliffs. This is the place of some “bodegas” where they produce Pisco and wine too. The Majes river is also an important breeding ground for crayfish, used to make for one of the finest Peruvian dish, the Chupe de Camarones!
Then, you will discover prehistoric dinosaur footprints in Querulpa and the impressive viewpoint on the valley of Majes and its cultivated lands. This site was accidentally discovered in 2002.
Lunch (not included).
The Toro Muerto petroglyphs: Wonderful and surprising, this archaeological site in the desert presents thousands of volcanic rocks with engraved animals, plants, humans, anthropomorphic beings, geometrical shapes, scattered on several square kilometers. Archaeologists still wonder about its origin; it must have been made 1200 years ago and been realized by the Wari civilization.
Besides, it's one of the world's richest rock art area, and it's composed by more than 2500 petroglyphs (during this walk, it's recommended to protect yourself from the sun because it's very strong).
Return to Arequipa and arrival around 6:30 pm.
