The Misti Volcano - 2 days / 1 night

First day: Arequipa - Base camp

At 8:00 AM, departure from Arequipa in a 4 wheels heading to the Misti Volcano by the Aguada Blanca route. After 3 hours of transportation during which we will cross the National Reserve, we will arrive at 4400 meters above sea level (14435 ft). There, we will start our trek with an ascent of 3h30 beginning in sand dunes to our base camp located at 4900 meters altitude (16076 ft). We will set up the camp and acclimatize to the altitude during the afternoon. Around 6:00 PM, we will enjoy the splendid colors of the sky before a starry night. Dinner, then overnight stay in a tent.

Second day: Base camp - Misti Summit - Arequipa

We’ll wake up around 1:00 AM to have breakfast and prepare the equipment. Then, we’ll climb during 5 or 6 hours to reach the Misti summit. During this way up, we will admire a very beautiful sunrise on the Arequipa's desert. Arrival early in the morning at the rim of the crater at 5750 meters above sea level (18865 ft)! We’ll stay there a moment to enjoy the impressive landscapes and the view on the slopes of the volcano meanwhile those who want can continue with a 45-minutes' walk to reach the Cross at the top of the Misti at 5825 meters (19111 ft)! From up there, you'll have an unforgettable panorama at 360 degrees. Then, we’ll go back down to the camp to pick up the equipment and we'll continue until the meeting point with our 4 wheels (descent about 4 hours). Return to Arequipa and arrival in the middle of the afternoon.

  • cereal bars, cookies and dried fruits
  • water (we recommend you to take at least 5 liters)
  • hiking boots
  • a backpack
  • very warm clothes

Additional information

  • We recommand the Aguada Blanca path to go to the summit because the ascent is less used and more balanced in terms of effort.
  • Necessary skills: this ascent is reserved for people with an excellent physical condition and having experimented high mountain (it’s better to have done treks above 4000 meters o 13123 ft).
  • We recommend you to be acclimatized to altitude before doing this climb, for example with the visit of the regions of Cusco, Lake Titicaca or Colca (if you want us to propose you trips which could facilitate your acclimatization, please contact us).
